Medico-Legal Podiatry – FAQs

Q1. What is medico-legal podiatry?
Medico-legal podiatry involves expert podiatry assessments and reports used in legal cases involving foot, ankle and lower-limb conditions. This may include personal injury, workplace accidents, road traffic collisions, clinical negligence or disputes about treatment, orthotics and long-term function. The podiatry expert provides an independent opinion on diagnosis, causation, prognosis, future care and treatment costs.

Q2. What does a medico-legal podiatry assessment with Mr Abid Hussain involve?
The assessment typically includes a detailed medical and injury history, clinical examination of the foot, ankle and lower limb, ultrasound scanning where indicated, computerised GaitScan™ analysis, video biomechanical assessment and digital strength testing using a dynamometer. Findings are then interpreted to provide a clear, court-compliant opinion on function, prognosis and treatment needs.

Q3. Which types of cases can you report on?
We provide medico-legal podiatry reports for personal injury and clinical negligence matters involving the foot, ankle and lower limb. This includes soft tissue injuries, fractures, tendon and ligament damage, plantar plate tears, chronic biomechanical problems, diabetic foot complications, orthotic-related issues, occupational injuries and sports-related lower-limb trauma.

Q4. Do you accept instructions for claimant, defendant and joint expert work?
Yes. Instructions are accepted from claimant solicitors, defendant solicitors, insurers, case managers and as a single joint expert where required. All opinions are independent and unbiased, in line with current expert witness guidance.

Q5. How long does it take to receive a medico-legal podiatry report?
In most cases, the claimant can be seen within 10–14 working days of instruction. Following the assessment and receipt of all relevant documentation, the medico-legal report is usually completed within approximately 14 days. If you have an urgent deadline, please contact us to discuss availability.

Q6. What information do you need from instructing solicitors?
We normally request a detailed letter of instruction, relevant medical records, imaging reports, witness statements, existing expert reports, details of employment and functional impact, plus any schedules of loss or draft questions you wish answered. Clear instructions ensure a focused, robust and court-ready report.

Q7. Where are assessments carried out?
Assessments are carried out at our clinic at Studio 402, Green House, Custard Factory, Gibb Street, Birmingham B9 4AA, an easily accessible central Birmingham location with excellent transport links.
